This past weekend I took my daughter Thrift Shopping at her request. It was my first real experience going thrift shopping. I’m usually headed to the Mall, Boutiques, Department Stores or Shopping Outlets looking for the good SALES! I will occasionally visit TJ Maxx, ROSS, and Marshall’s and go through their clothing racks and see what catches my eye. Now, I’m just going to put it out there that I’m an impatient shopper. I usually don’t try things on in dressing rooms. I would rather buy the item(s), take it home, try it on and if I need to go back to the store for any reason I will. I know it sounds so backwards but, I’ve never liked trying things on in store dressing rooms. Any time I’ve ever been sucked into trying something on it was like pulling teeth with me. I just want to grab and go! I think my husband appreciates that about me. Ha! So you can just imagine my patience level when looking through tons of clothing at a thrift store. One thing I can say is the store was organized for the most part by size, type of garment, accessories and SALE items.
My daughter had some H&M items in her closet that she’d never worn. The tags were still attached to the clothing and she didn’t plan on wearing them so she brought them along to sell. That’s my kind of thrift shop experience! I know that the clothing is supposed to be in good condition, gently used and stylish brand name clothing but, I don’t know how comfortable I feel wearing something previously worn by someone else that isn’t my friend or family etc. I’ll swap clothes in a minute, I’ve just never done it with complete strangers! I have so many friends online and offline that go thrifting and I see their fabulous finds but, they are seasoned thrift shoppers and I don’t know how it was for them in the beginning. I will say that even though this was my daughters shopping trip, I did pick up a black, silver and white striped racerback tunic from Arden B. I liked the top and it still had the original tags on it. It was originally $59.00 then went on SALE for $44.99 at Arden B but, I bought it for a whopping $8.00 at Plato’s Closet! I think I did good for a thrift shopping beginner!
I plan on looking for more thrift shops in my area to visit. In the past I have always donated clothing that I didn’t wear or couldn’t fit anymore to organizations like Good Will and Dress For Success that accept clothing donations. I had never thought about selling my clothes to a thrift store before. I have a few items that I’ve never worn and handbags that are just sitting in my closet collecting dust, maybe it’s time for a closet purge! Stay tuned to see what I pair my new tunic with in an upcoming fashion post. So, have you ever been thrifting? If so, do you like it and what tips can you share?
