So, not only is it essential to engage on twitter but, if you are present and do it at the right time you just may make someone’s day and yours simultaneously. The other morning I had woken up and immediately checked email and twitter like I normally do. Sorry, if you thought that washing my face or brushing my teeth came first. That’s the second thing I handle after waking up. Ha! I had a tweet from Corvida Raven asking if I was in Durham already. I had tweeted her earlier in the week stating how excited I was to finally get to meet her at the AT&T 28 Days event. She didn’t know I resided in Durham. I replied “Yes, I live here.” In a matter of seconds I got a text message from my online and offline friend Regina Twine asking what I was doing? Corvida had made plans for the day but, due to our funny North Carolina weather she could no longer do what she planned. At this point she just wanted to relax after traveling, before she had to be interviewed by multiple media outlets and speak at the AT&T 28 Days Concert Series event.
Regina asked if I was available to host Corvida for the day and at the same time Corvida was sending me a DM to discuss the same thing. Me host one of the awesome social media icons I look up to in my home for the day, sure why not! After a phone call and quick clean up my home from tornado mini me, I was on my way to meet Corvida. We made our way back to my home but, not before stopping at Bojangle’s for some breakfast and we talked for a while before she got some much needed rest. We are both of Caribbean decent, we discussed being brought up the strict Jamaican way and of course we could not “NOT” talk about technology. It was very nice to meet and get to know Corvida outside of being a social media expert. She’s down to earth, and REAL, I love to meet people who tell it like it is. Mini Me was drawn to Corvida and he showed her his iPad 2 and played a few games while she watched him navigate his way around his tablet better than some adults.
Corvida and I discussed the importance of using social media and engaging on multiple platforms for different reasons whether business or personal. When Corvida spoke at the AT&T 28 Days event about Digital Media = Participatory Media, it made perfect sense. Why do people listen to what we have to say? At the end of the day we can all learn something from one another. We are all educators that have information to share and students in situations where we can learn. Using social media is also a great way to network online and start building relationships. There have been many instances where I met someone online and maintained a relationship with them until we actually got a chance to meet in person whether at a blog conference or a networking event. It’s like seeing an old friend that you haven’t seen in a while even when you are meeting for the first time. It was simply divine intervention at the way this particular situation played out and it was an amazing experience.
