I had the opportunity to attend School of Rock – The Musical on opening night at the DPAC. I also had a great date, my nine-year-old son who thoroughly enjoyed every moment. We’ve seen the School of Rock film but, this was our first time seeing the musical and it was hilarious. I’ll honestly say that I went in not knowing what to expect and I was totally wowed! The storyline kept your attention and the music was great! I was amazed at all the young talent on that stage! They know how to play those instruments!
If you’re unfamiliar with the School of Rock – The Musical, it’s based on the smash hit 2003 film of the same, featuring music from the movie, as well as an original score by Andrew Lloyd Weber, lyrics by Glenn Slater, a book by Julian Fellowes and direction by Laurence Connor. It’s a hilarious musical that follows Dewey Finn, a failed wannabe Rockstar who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school.
It’s pure comedy as he takes over his best friends’ identity to teach and turns a classroom full of straight-A students into the GREATEST rock band. He also connects with the children and listens to them which grows their bond while he’s their substitute teacher. While he’s teaching these young scholars “music history & music appreciation†he also gets sweet on the very strict and by the book headmistress. However, he helps her to rediscover herself before all that uptightness set in.

Overall, I had an amazing experience and really enjoyed my son having a great time. He followed the storyline, shared his commentary, asked questions and rocked out to the music. There was some adult themed content that went along with the storyline and he got it! O_o Nothing too bad, I was just tickled! There is an age restriction, children under the age of 6 aren’t allowed at this performance. Every child in attendance must have a parent or chaperone and be able to sit still in their own seat without disturbing other guests.
