I really didn’t have any high expectations for Mother’s Day. I just wanted to spend quality time with my family and get some much needed rest. Early Saturday morning my five year old decided to start jumping around, thinking he’s Superman and fell and hurt his arm. The hubs and I took him to the pediatricians office first thing Saturday morning and we were referred to UNC ER for x-rays and diagnosis. The x-rays confirmed that he broke his arm and needed to be placed in a splint for a few days due the swelling and fluid on his elbow and we were scheduled to follow up in a week with an Orthopedic Dr and put on a cool cast that he’ll have for a minimum of six weeks. Now, I had to brace myself for the next seven days trying to keep him comfortable with pain medications and Benadryl until he’s in his cast. Night one wasn’t too bad and mini me fell asleep in my arms and I slept light to make sure he didn’t wake up and try to remove his splint.
Mother’s Day started out great! We all woke up and went to Sunday morning church service. The message was great, it was the kick off to a six week series the gospel of the family. Throughout church service mini me was complaining of his arm itching and was whining and crying. After church we went to grab a bite to eat, went to the mall and then returned home. I was tired and mini me needed to get ready for an afternoon nap. I set mini me up next to me in bed with his arm elevated with the ice packs to help with the itching. No more than a little while later mini me gets out of bed and is really quiet and I ask him what’s wrong he doesn’t answer and I tell him to get back to bed, next thing I know mini me has gotten out of his splint and his injured arm is exposed and unprotected. I asked him why he did that and he said… because my arm was itching me. I immediately called the health link to explain what had happened and alert his doctor etc. I was asked to go back to the Pediatric ER Sunday evening.
At this point… I’m like what are the odds that I’d be in the ER two days in a row on Mother’s Day weekend! Well, a mother’s job is never done and I hope all the mommies had a wonderful Mother’s Day and that it was less eventful than mine. I pray we make it to Friday without any further incidents so that we can get mini me in his long term cast that he’ll be in it for at least six weeks minimum. Update: So, I spoke too soon, my teenage son got injured playing football today at school and injured his arm (nothing’s broken) and got a laceration to the upper lip that needed stitches. Now I have two sons in slings! *sigh* Happy Mother’s Day to me! So, how was your Mother’s Day weekend?
