I was so excited when I learned about Love Jones The Musical coming to DPAC (Durham Performing Arts Center) in Durham, NC. It’s written and directed by Theodore Witcher. I saw when the tour started and it seemed like it was headed to every city but mine. They kept adding tour dates and FINALLY I saw Durham, NC on the lineup. I can’t believe it’s the 20th Anniversary of Love Jones. I remember Love Jones like it was yesterday. Love Jones is one of my all-time favorite urban romance films. I have the DVD and Soundtrack to the movie. I can remember exactly what was going on in my life when that movie was released and it takes me down memory lane.
This is a star studded line up with Musiq Soulchild, Chrisette Michele, Marsha Ambrosius, Dave Hollister, Raheem Devaughn, MC Lyte and many more. This cast comes together to tell the love story of Darius & Nina through theatricals and song. I really enjoyed all the musical performances. It was like you were at a mini concert within a play. All the songs took me back in the day and I enjoyed every minute of it. Love Jones The Musical was engaging and the story line retained your attention. There were some really hilarious moments that kept you laughing and I have to acknowledge the awesome dancers. I wasn’t prepared! They had me blushing in my seat. Go see the show!
Love Jones The Musical has been adapted from the original film to this upscale modern day love story that we can all relate to. Everyone should’ve seen the Love Jones movie (in my opinion) but for some reason if you haven’t… The two main characters are Darius and Nina. They meet by chance at an upscale night club called the Sanctuary in Chicago. Darius takes one look at Nina and has to get to know her. Nina isn’t really looking for a relationship because of a previous one she recently got out of. Darius takes it upon himself to perform an impromptu spoken word for Nina that leaves her a little embarrassed yet intrigued. Nina does end up giving Darius her phone number and that’s how it all started.
It seems like it was love at first sight but the timing doesn’t seem to be right for either of them. Nina is pursuing her career in photography and Darius trying to tap into his creative juices follow his dream to write a book. They encounter many obstacles that try to keep them from being together but, something keeps drawing them back to each other. Overall, this was a great play! I really enjoyed Dave Hollister performing “Before I Let You Go†it’s one of my favorite songs. Chrisette Michele belting out Open My Heart was great and Marsha Ambrosius singing Late Nights & Early Morning gave me life! Angie Fisher can sang! There were so many more great performances. I enjoyed them all!
Check out Love Jones The Musical website for more information and to see when it may be coming to your city. They delivered and even added a second show! I didn’t have any doubts it would be less than a stellar performance. Disclosure: I received a pair of comp tickets to Love Jones The Musical to facilitate my review of this outstanding musical. All opinions are 100% honest and completely my own.
