Every year I get my favorite Girl Scout Cookies in bulk and try to make them last as long as possible (don’t we all!) since I know I only get to stock up once a year. I think I did really well last year, I ate my last box of Thin Mints in November of 2012 right around Thanksgiving to be exact. This year I have managed to buy twenty boxes for my family and an additional ten to send to my brother and his military troop serving a tour over in Afghanistan, inspired by Girl Scouts Operation Cookie Drop. It’s just a little more personal for me.
**Here is some literature on Operation Cookie Drop taken from the Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines website. Operation Cookie Drop is a program through which customers make donations, which are used to purchase Girl Scout Cookies for our brave military troops serving overseas.
In 2012, customers donated enough funds to send nearly 100,000 boxes of cookies through the program. Since the program started in 2005, more than half a million (512,000) boxes of cookies have been shipped to our military troops.
How it works: Customers give monetary donations to a Girl Scout or Girl Scout troop during the annual cookie sale program. The cookies are then shipped overseas to military personnel serving from Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg, and Seymour Johnson AFB in May. In addition, USOs in Jacksonville and Raleigh, and the North Carolina branch of Give2TheTroops based in Greenville distribute Girl Scout cookies to the military personnel they serve.
I can’t wait to have “The Fab Four” (what I loving call my children) write their uncle and his troop some notes and draw pictures to send along with the cookies. Operation Cookie Drop is genius and I know that so many soldiers and military families appreciate it.
