The Gossip Game premiered last night on VH1 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have over ten years of experience in the newspaper industry and I was curious to see what similarities there would be to being a female on-air, online media personality vs. newspaper or magazine publication journalists. I can even bring blogging into this being that there are many bloggers today and the number continues to increase . New York City is the hub of music and entertainment and you have these seven women that have their own piece of real estate in the hip hop and gossip reporting arena. I believe that each one of them has their own unique talent to bring to the table but, reporting within the same niche can be a bit competitive. I can envision a bit of drama this season. Here’s a little blurb about the cast members…
Candice “Ms.Drama” Williams runs her own entertainment website and is a media personality.
Sharon Carpenter is an online & on-air news journalist that reports on many diverse topics keeping her young urban audience informed.
Kay Foxx has lots of radio experience under her belt and now lives at Hot 97 and is an on air radio personality
JasFly is a freelance journalist and writes for several publications giving us the 411 on hip hop.
Kim Osorio is the only female Editor In Chief at The Source Magazine. Her resume is crazy and she is holding her position down.
Angela Yee has put in work and made a name for herself in radio. She is currently with Power 105.1 weekday mornings on “The Breakfast Club” Power 105.1 is the #1 Radio Station in the nation.
Vivian Billings has shared a few great collaborations gaining her notoriety in the industry. DaNYCGossipGirl started her blog back in 2008. She reports on hip hop entertainment news and gossip… of course!
Last night I wasn’t able to choose a favorite, you know we all do it! We have our favorite reality vixen for the season, I’ve done it with all my favorite shows but, I wasn’t able to see everyone’s true personality last night. I did LOVE the nuggets Ms.Drama was dropping last night. If you missed it here are some of my faves…
“You have to know who your enemies & your allies are”, “Anybody that’s going to be successful in what they do… They need a BRAND!”, and “You don’t have to go after somebody to make your story, keep your facts straight.” ~Ms. Drama
I can just imagine what these women have to deal with reporting on what is mostly a male dominated industry. Sharon Carpenter gave us a portion of what she has to deal with by not being taken seriously because of her gender. Kim Osorio made it clear that she loves her family but, she is dedicated to her work! I can relate to that statement. Vivian works a FT job and then when she is off the main clock she’s being a mom, wife and giving us the scoop on her blog. I have no idea what went down between Ms.Drama and DaNYCGossipGirl but, if looks could kill? I guess we’ll see what went down later. I really loved that Angela Yee and Vivian have a genuine relationship and they collaborate sometimes. Angela kept it cool at her blogger appreciation event when things started to get heated between Ms.Drama & Vivian that was a plus! JusFly seems like she is all about her business, and I can’t be mad at that! I’m looking forward to the next episode of The Gossip Game and can’t wait to see what unfolds as I can relate to certain situations first hand. You can catch The Gossip Game on VH1 at 9 p.m. EST on Monday nights!
Bloggers do you feel a sense of competitiveness if you are in a particular niche with other bloggers that share that space? How do you separate yourself from the crowd? I want to know…
As a beauty blogger I do notice a lot of competitiveness. I always try to remember I am a professional and licensed hair and makeup artist and that separates me from a lot of my blogging counterparts. However, I also take note of the fact that people at the top of their games respect each other, and do not bicker.
There is room in the game for everyone and we all have to show our particular talents. You cannot waste your time worrying about what someone else is doing, find your niche and work it out. By the way I love the show so far and I even have a small connection.
Monae,
I’m in complete agreement with your response. We all (bloggers) don’t have the same credentials and it’s great when people at the top respect each other. I agree that there is room for us all to achieve our goals and showcase our talents. I’ve dealt with people who viewed me as a potential threat and that was an eye opener for me! I love The Gossip Game as well and can’t wait to see the storyline play out. Awesome on the small connection, something is always better than nothing! 😉
Going over to set the DVR now. I didn’t even know about this one. Can’t wait to see it.

Show sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out.
As a blogger I do not feel competitive with other bloggers. There is plenty of room for us all and I use quality as a way of standing out from others in my niche.

I have never heard of this show but will definitely check my local listings to catch it next week. There is definitely room for everyone and when we realize that and start working together, we can all reach the top!

I didn’t recognize any of the ladies from the gossip blogs I visit, so I skipped the show. I may check it out on a replay.
But there is a ton of competition among bloggers. I’m learning that we’re more powerful if we work together, for instance doing blogger ourtreach or creating a campaign, than we are by ourselves.

I don’t feel a lot of competition with other bloggers in my niche. I’ve found that I do a lot better working with other bloggers than trying to figure out how to compete against them. I think the good thing about blogging is that in my opinion there’s room for a lot of us.

I think there is a lot of competition among bloggers, but it depends on the niche. In my niche (healthcare) there aren’t many takcling it from the African-American perspective. I’m thankful for that. But I do agree with others, in that there is room for all of us & working collectively advances us all.
