My name is Jen and I’m a receipt hoarder! I’m really horrible about going through my receipts and getting rid of them once they serve me no purpose anymore. I even save receipts that say “FINAL SALE” on it. It’s not like I can return or exchange the item so why am I holding on to this receipt?!?! I love to shop a good sale and most of the time ALL sales are final. I know that most stores have their own return policies that can be anywhere from a 7, 14, or even a 30 day return policy. In my perfect world I would organize and purge my receipts periodically or get rid of taking paper receipts all together. I also shop online sometimes and will receive my confirmation by email once my payment has been processed and shipped, then I get the package and there is a packing slip and receipt that I keep! I do like the option of getting receipts emailed to me when I make purchases. It would be great if ALL stores jumped on that bandwagon! So here are some reasons why I should discontinue my bad habit of hoarding receipts! However, I do keep my business receipts for tax purposes but, personal ones… not so much!
1.) First and foremost I would like to SAVE paper! Wasting all this paper makes no sense at all. It just turns into a big mess eventually and takes up unnecessary space.
2.) I wouldn’t have to schedule special times to purge my receipts and organize them by date. My time is precious, I really don’t want to waste it on old receipts.
3.) This forces me to create new time savings habits that will help me keep my receipts organized digitally. I’ve been researching some apps! I’m also taking suggestions.
4.) I just don’t need to SAVE a receipt that says “FINAL SALE” I think I just have a problem and need an intervention. It’s a weird habit!
5.) When I go shopping in other cities while on a business trip or vacation, it’s not like I’m going to be able to return the item anyway unless I decide to do it by mail which I have NEVER done! So why again am I saving these receipts?
6.) I even save restaurant receipts!!!!! I mean I have already eaten the meal and left the establishment. I’m pretty sure I’m not going to return a eaten meal. Lol! This needs to stop!
7.) I save receipts after I receive a service like getting my nails done, hair done or visiting the spa! I always ask for a receipt and I know that I’ll just file it away adding to my chaos.
8.) I rarely have cash and pay for everything by credit and debit card which automatically will register on my credit statement and bank account. I also ask for receipts. **face palm**
9.) I sometimes get a receipt at the gas pump, but I’ve been working on pressing “NO” when asked “Do you want a receipt?” I’m not going to return the gas. Lol!
10.) I vow in 2015 to go paperless with receipts as much as I can! I’m in the process of researching the best app for me and I will TRY my best to stop collecting receipts.
Do you have any hoarding habits? My other bad hoarding habit is condiments in my kitchen drawer. Lol! We’ve talked about this before. I think I’m doing so much better though. Do you have any advice to offer a receipt hoarder?
OMGosh this is too much!! I had to comment…I have an entire drawer of receipts. I save them so long some of them are just white paper now because the ink has worn off. LMBO. I just did a mini purge last week but my purse and wallets have tons. I thought I was the only one!!! 😉

Oh my goodness I’m a receipt hoarder, too! I have considered going paperless, but I really just like having the actual paper receipt. It helps me keep track of my spending better, I think. I clean them out once every couple of weeks, just to stay organized. And I always find more, even after I’ve cleaned out! #receipthoarderproblems

LOL!! I can so relate. We are self employed so we HAVE to keep reciepts but I do tend to keep more than needed!!
Good luck on cutting back this year and going paperless!!
I HATE receipts (and plastic bags for that matter…). If asked, I usually comment “no thanks” on getting a receipt, especially if it’s one of the scenarios you mentioned above. Nevertheless, my wallet still somehow ends up packed with receipts from months ago! I’m working on tossing receipts immediately, unless it’s something that I may have to return later that week.
Tiffany, ha that’s too funny! I also save receipts when I but gifts for other people but, will sometimes skip the gift receipt. I still have receipts from Christmas presents that I bought. Lol!
Kate, lets start a support group! Lol! #receipthoarderproblems
Mikki, it’s funny to see how many of us can relate to one another. I don’t feel so bad anymore. I will stay on task though… Lol!
Tiffany, I giggled that “HATE” was in all caps! Oh, yes I can’t stand too many plastic bags. I like that some stores are allowing you to recycle them now. It’s great that you are working on tossing receipts immediately. I need to start!
LOL! Who knew that this was such a thing. I hoard receipts as well because I ALWAYS find myself wanting or needing to return something. Hey, you never know!

Cia, yes so true! You really never know!
Hi Jen,
I know the perfect app for you. It is called Receipt Hog! Snap a pic of your receipt and earn coins towards gift cards, etc. My receipts were taking over.
